Guatemala Three Ways: Part 1 — Antigua Photo Tour

The volcanoes rise above everything in Antigua.

Timeless architecture… pristine nature… adventure… and an abundance of traditions steeped from generations. Guatemala is a treasure chest of magical experiences — with much more of a retained indigenous culture than the rest of Central America.

Whether you’re visiting the charming colonial towns like Antigua, the volcano-dotted shores of Lake Atitlán, or the Mayan Ruins that kiss the grounds of the Peten region — Guatemala has so much beauty and adventure to offer. I spent a week in the country last fall, and was able to explore these three very different and distinct experiences. Come along with me on a photo tour!

Part One: Antigua

Roaming the streets of this historic colonial town, you constantly stumble upon amazing architecture. Roam the streets, visit chapels and monasteries, check out some cool markets and galleries, and immerse yourself in Guatemalan traditions.

Where to Stay:

Villa Las Pilas is a private villa that was once a family home. It’s a traditional Guatemalan property offering three bedrooms that are situated around an open-air, flower filled courtyard, along with a living room and library. Handcrafted furniture, antiques, objects d’art and family heirlooms fill the space, inviting guests to relax in their Antigua home. Guests will feel as if they’ve stumbled into one of the many beautiful courtyards of private estates in Guatemala — and as though they’ve been issued a private invitation to stay at a friend’s home. Richly coloured painted walls are adorned with an incredible collection of local artwork, both modern and antiquities. A large, elegant living room with a grand piano and fireplace are at the centre of the estate; the covered verandas, smaller den and library also beckon with cosy places to gather.
