Stargazing is one of the best ways to pass an evening, but if you want a little more excitement perhaps UFO-gazing is more up your alley.
Places like Area 51 or Roswell, New Mexico, are the most obvious choices, and the skies over the American Southwest offer up stunning panoramic views of the cosmos, but statistically speaking you’ll have a better shot at spotting your celestial quarry, without getting lost in the Mojave desert, in these three localities:
Los Angeles, California
Hollywood glamor, palm trees, and salty ocean breezes aren’t the only things you’ll find in L.A. With more than 1,400 reported UFO sightings in the first four months of 2015, Los Angeles County has one of the highest numbers of sightings in the country.
In fact, California has more UFO sightings — both in sheer numbers and by the percentage of the population making reports — than any other state in the country.
It sure seems that something is going on in the skies over the Golden State.
King County and Yakima County, Washington
While you’re enjoying a hot cup of coffee in Seattle, make sure to step outside and scan the skyline for flying saucers.
Thousands of reports thus far in 2015 make King County one of the most likely places to see an unidentified flying object in Washington State, but Yakima County is more widely regarded as a hotspot since it boasts the largest proportion of UFO reports per capita.
Horry County, South Carolina
East Coast residents and travelers, your best bet for catching a glimpse of extraterrestrial technology is in Conway or Myrtle Beach. For every 100 residents of Horry County, South Carolina, there is an average of 43 reports of strange aircraft hovering in the night sky. Next time you take a relaxing vacation to the South Carolina beach, turn your gaze skyward. You might spot something truly strange.
Of course, you can always camp out in Arizona or New Mexico in one of the little desert towns. Many of them cater specifically to tourists looking for an out-of-this-world experience with themed restaurants, little green men on keychains and coffee mugs, and special tours under the night sky. But for those that aren’t excited by the prospect of kitschy alien tee shirts and science fiction memorabilia, give the above spots a try.
