Yes as the rallying motto at the Pearl Harbor War Memorial tells us, like many such sites, is that we must have them so that we never forget.
I’m trading places currently, for two weeks, on the Hawaiian island of Oahu. Though I’ve visited Maui and the Big Island of Hawaii before, this is my first time on Oahu. I’m staying in a home, taking care of the owners’ property and animals while they are away, on the eastern shore of the island – trading places with their lives, experiencing their daily world.
I knew as soon as I confirmed the trip that one of my must-visits would be Pearl Harbor. I’ve been to Omaha Beach in Normandy, France – which had special meaning to me, as my grandfather landed there on D-Day and I was there to retrace his steps. Likewise, here in Hawaii at the spot where the Japanese launched a surprise attack on the United States of America, catapulting us into World War II, held similar meaning.
I invite you to experience Pearl Harbor with me.
