Australia is better known for its picturesque landscapes and relaxing beaches with tropical areas in the northern part. Many travel the country to explore their incredible rainforests that offer lush and enchanting areas in what some consider the most beautiful part of the country.
1. Queensland
Queensland is unique because it offers five climatic types of rainforests that include tropical, cool temperate, warm temperate, subtropical, and dry. The Daintree Rainforest is one of the most popular areas to explore for its flowing river that runs through it and how it connects to the sea. Here, you’ll find 30 percent of the reptile species and 65 percent of the bat and butterfly species in the country.
The Kuranda Rainforest and The Daintree is known as the oldest tropical rainforest on the planet.
2. Tasmania
Tasmania is unique in that it is the only island of Australia and located in the south of the country. Also known as the “Island of Inspiration,” its offers stunning views in the temperate rainforest with a cool climate and plenty of species found nowhere else on earth.
Its canopy of trees shade the environment for an overgrowth of tree ferns and mosses to create translucent views. Protected by the Conservation Covenant, this rainforest stretches over 10 percent of the state and is void of climbing plants or palms. This quiet area also has fungi covering the floors of the rainforest with musical sounds that include birds and insects.
3. New South Wales
This Australian state offers 111 rare plants with a majority of the rainforests currently threatened with The Gondwana Rainforests. Much of the climate includes dry, subtropical, cool temperate, and warm temperate with plenty of waterfalls and streams.
Exploring Australia isn’t complete without visiting the eroded volcano of Mount Warning Wollumbin. You’ll be able to reach this area while hiking across tree roots that run deep and are covered with moss, wrapped around other trees at times for a spectacular scene. Here you can enjoy activities that include birdwatching and canoeing as you spend time amongst the wild.
4. Northern Territory
The stunning rainforests in the Northern Territory consist of rainfall in the wet months, about 90 percent of it comprised in that time period of the entire year. An abundance of fruit can be found in this type of dry rainforest, far more than other types.
Perhaps most popular for Jim Jim Falls, many people come for the deep pools of water that sit below a 250 meter plunge. Their clear water pools, incredible waterfalls, and quiet creeks make the location feel like a dream. The lush woodlands provides plenty of trails and guided tours that take three to five of days to explore and hike through.
5. Victoria
Few places are as beautiful as Victoria, Australia. These protected rainforests have long histories that allow you to hike or drive while seeing the sights. The vast trees loom overhead with running streams and rainforest gullies.
Melba Gully is quite the experience as one of the wettest locations in the state. It’s a dense and plant populated area with convenient picnic benches and trails. The environment is calm and cool, a perfect place to find peace and enjoy the rainforest’s characteristics.
Glow worms can be found night, lining the walkways and seen in various plants, creating quite a spectacular sight that feels a bit magical.
6. Western Australia
Western Australia provides a wealth of untouched wildlife in the Kimberely with 90 percent of rain occurring during the four month wet season, allowing over 300 species of plants to flourish in the area. Temperatures range between 35oC and 5oC with natural growing fruit, different birds, and flying foxes inhabiting the area. The tranquil environment is scattered throughout Western Australia, endangered species still seen when exploring the land.
Pools and springs are plentiful in this particular rainforest, the perfect place to enjoy the gems of this area and cool off.
